252 news materials found in violation of election code of conduct

Kathmandu: A total of 252 news materials disseminated by various media were found to be in contravention to the code of conduct issued for the elections to the House of Representatives and State Assemblies- 2017.
The Press Council Nepal, has, during its special monitoring from November 12 to December 1 of journalists and election code of conduct, found that such a number of media materials were disseminated in this period violating the election code of conduct. This is what the PCN said in its preliminary monitoring report.
Of them, 98 materials went through 62 print media, 53 were presented by 31 radio, 49 via 19 television channels and 52 were released by 18 online news portals.
The news materials carried by the mass media were monitored in two phases – one before the start of the election silent period and the next from the start of the silent period until the voting was concluded.
It was found in course of the monitoring that these media had broadcast the election campaign programmes of political parties and candidates and given live coverage to such programmes in contravention of the journalists' code of conduct and the election code of conduct, the Press Council Nepal stated.
The Council also faulted these media of disseminating advertisement in a bigger size and for a greater period of time than determined by the election code of conduct.
