  • Police officer killed in Indian-controlled Kashmir attack

    SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, March 30 (Xinhua) -- A police officer was killed and his wife critically wounded after suspected militants barged inside his house and fired upon them in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Friday.
       In a separate incident, a civilian was wounded after gunmen attacked him.
       The twin attacks took place in southern districts of Anantnag and Kulgam late Thursday evening.
       Meanwhile, militants ambushed an army vehicle in village Ahgam of Shopian district on late Thursday evening. During the exchange of fire, a civilian and a militant were wounded.
       Following the attacks, police issued an alert in districts, south of Srinagar.
       So far no militant outfit claimed responsibility for any such attacks.
       Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
