  • Dr Mahat holds talks with Amir, foreign and labour Minister of Qatar

    Kathmandu, Jan 11: Foreign Minister Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat, presently on a visit to Qatar, met and held talks separately with the Amir, foreign and labour minister of Qatar on Wednesday.
    During the talks, Minister Mahat inquired about the state of service, benefits and safety of the more than 300,000 Nepali workers in Qatar. Matters relating to the establishment of a safe home for the Nepali workers facing problems in the gulf state and the formation of a mechanism under the Labour Ministry to address the problems facing the Nepali workers were discussed during the meeting, according to Mahat's public relations and press coordinator Yekraj Pathak.
    Also discussed was the possible Qatari investment in setting up a ploy-technical college and in the tourism, hydropower and telecom sectors of Nepal. It was mentioned during the meetings that Qatar would be sending a team to the investment summit that Nepal is hosting in coming March and that would recommend on the possible areas for investment, said Pathak.
    During the discussion, Qatar was very positive on Nepal's concern over the rights and security of the Nepali workers there. Dr Mahat also warmly welcomed Qatar's recent reforms on labour law.
    Minister Dr Mahat also extended invitation to the Qatari Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammad Bin Abdul Rahman Bin Jassim Al Thani, to visit Nepal. In response Thani said he was interested to visit Nepal and added that Qatar would pay special attention on the rights of Nepali workers.
    Minister Thani also lauded Nepali workers, describing them as hardworking and honest.
    Similarly, Foreign Affairs Minister Mahat held extensive discussion with Labour Minister of Qatar, Dr Issa bin Saad Al Naimi Juffali, over different aspects of rights and service and benefits of Nepali migrant workers in Qatar.
    They also discussed on increasing quota for skilled and semi-skilled workers from Nepal, necessary revision of Labour agreement signed in 2005, forming a separate mechanism to resolve problems of workers at the earliest, arrangement of safe house as well as increasing coordination and collaboration between Labour Ministry of Qatar and Nepali Embassy.
    On the occasion, Minister of State for Labour of Qatar was also present. He expressed commitment for necessary support, saying the government of Qatar was positive to all these issues.
    Joint-Secretary at the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Govindamani Bhurtel, was also present.
    Similarly, Foreign Affairs Secretary, Shaker Das Bairagi, Charge de' Affairs to Qatar, Mani Ratna Sharma, Kailash Kishor Raya of West Asia Division of Foreign Affairs Ministry were present in the bilateral talks.
