  • Six lynched over child abduction rumors in eastern India

    NEW DELHI, May 19 :(Xinhua) At least six people were lynched in two different incidents in India's eastern state of Jharkhand over rumors of child abduction, officials said Friday.

    The incidents took place at Seraikela and East Singbhum districts, southeast of Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand."We have received information that six people were beaten to death by mobs at two different places over child theft rumors yesterday," a police official in Ranchi told Xinhua.

    "Investigations have been ordered in both cases and we would soon identify the people behind these criminal acts," he said. 

    Reports said in East Singbhum district, three men were killed and a woman was injured after villagers dragged them out of a house and thrashed them in the open air amid rumors of kidnapping children.Likewise, at Jamshedpur in adjacent Saraikela district, three cattle traders were lynched over similar rumors.

    The traders were travelling in a car when a self-appointed child vigilante mob attacked them and set their car on fire.

    There has been an increase in attacks on strangers on suspicion of being child abductors in the district.Authorities have rushed huge contingents of police to the districts to contain the situation.
